Mike Hodges (Bristol, 29 July 1932 – Dorset, 17 December 2022) was a British director, screenwriter, and producer, best known for his contribution to genre cinema, particularly noir and thriller. His career took off with the cult film *Get Carter* (1971), starring Michael Caine, a landmark film of British crime cinema for its gritty realism and ruthless atmosphere. He subsequently directed the pulp comedy *Pulp* (1972) and the iconic science fiction film *Flash Gordon* (1980), which became a classic for its camp style and soundtrack by Queen. After a period of lower visibility, Hodges returned to prominence with the neo-noir *Croupier* (1998), which received widespread critical acclaim and relaunched his career internationally. His final feature film, *I'll Sleep When I'm Dead* (2003), confirmed his status as a master of the existential thriller. Although he did not win major international awards, his work is widely recognized for its stylistic influence and thematic consistency.
