Paolo Taviani

Paolo Taviani (San Miniato, 1931 – Rome, 2024) was an Italian director and screenwriter, a central figure in auteur cinema. His career is inextricably linked to that of his brother Vittorio, with whom he formed a celebrated artistic partnership that lasted over fifty years. Starting in the 1960s, the Taviani brothers created works of strong social and political commitment, achieving international acclaim with *Padre Padrone* (1977), winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Their success was confirmed by *La notte di San Lorenzo* (1982), which won the Grand Prix Spécial du Jury, also at Cannes. Their filmography, awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival in 1986, includes titles such as *Kaos* (1984) and the more recent *Cesare deve morire* (2012), winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. After his brother's death, Paolo directed his final film, *Leonora addio* (2022), alone, continuing a unique stylistic exploration, balancing historical memory, realism, and poetic lyricism.
