Sion Sono (born in Toyokawa in 1961) is a Japanese film director, screenwriter, and poet, known for his provocative style and prolific output. His artistic career began in his youth as a poet before he turned to experimental cinema. He achieved international fame with *Suicide Club* (2001), a controversial work that explores youth alienation and mass culture. His eclectic filmography includes critically acclaimed titles such as the four-hour epic *Love Exposure* (2008), the brutal thriller *Cold Fish* (2010), and the drama *Himizu* (2011), set in post-Fukushima Japan. His works, which often blend extreme violence, surrealism, and social commentary, have received numerous awards at major international film festivals. These include the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin Film Festival for *Love Exposure* and the Marcello Mastroianni Award at the Venice Film Festival for the young performers in *Himizu*. He is considered one of the most radical and influential voices in contemporary Japanese cinema.
