
Vittorio Taviani
Vittorio Taviani (San Miniato, September 20, 1929 – Rome, April 15, 2018) was an Italian director and screenwriter who formed an inseparable artistic partnership with his brother Paolo, co-directing with him almost his entire filmography. Their cinema, rooted in social commitment and a profound reflection on Italian history, received the highest international accolades. Among their major works are *Padre padrone* (1977), with which they won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, and *La notte di San Lorenzo* (1982), which won the Special Grand Jury Prize at the same festival. Later successes include *Kaos* (1984), based on short stories by Pirandello, and the late masterpiece *Cesare deve morire* (2012), winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival. In 1986, the two brothers received the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Film Festival, cementing an authorial career as one of the most important in Italian cinema of the second half of the 20th century.
