Anita Berber

Anita Berber (1899-1928) was a controversial icon of the Weimar Republic, known for her Expressionist dance and provocative lifestyle. She also appeared in numerous silent films, often playing roles that mirrored her public image.

She specialized in characters such as *femmes fatales*, decadent 'vamps,' or marginal and ambiguous figures. Her screen presence was magnetic and often sinister, embodying Expressionist aesthetics and the era's liberation of customs.

Among her most significant cinematic works are *Unheimliche Geschichten* (1919), where she played several mysterious roles, *Algol - Tragödie der Macht* (1920), and *Lucrezia Borgia* (1922), in which she portrayed the historical figure of the same name. *Dirnentragödie* (1921) is another example of her ability to portray complex and tragic figures.

Although her film career was not the primary focus of her fame, her roles left a distinctive mark, making her a symbol of modernity and transgression in German cinema of the 1920s.
