Anton Walbrook
Anton Walbrook (born Adolf Wohlbrück, 1896-1967) was an Austrian-German actor. Fleeing Nazi Germany, he established himself as one of the most elegant and charismatic figures in British cinema.
His career is inextricably linked to the masterpieces of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. Among his most memorable roles are Colonel Theo Kretschmar-Schuldorff in *The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp* (1943) and manager Boris Lermontov in *The Red Shoes* (1948). His intense performance in *Gaslight* (1940) is also noteworthy.
Walbrook excelled in portraying complex, sophisticated men, often enigmatic or tragic, possessing great intelligence and a typically European melancholic charm. His final major film role was in Max Ophüls' visionary *Lola Montès* (1955).
