Arletty

**Arletty**, born Léonie Bathiat (Courbevoie, 1898 – Paris, 1992), was a French actress and an icon of the golden age of French cinema.

Her film career was inextricably linked to her hoarse and unmistakable voice, her natural charisma, and a sophisticated elegance combined with a spontaneous Parisian wit. She excelled in portraying strong, independent women, often with a mysterious past or from humble origins, but always imbued with great dignity and a touch of melancholy.

Among her most celebrated films, often directed by Marcel Carné, stand out masterpieces such as *Hôtel du Nord* (1938), where she delivered the famous line "Atmosphère, atmosphère!", and *Les Enfants du Paradis* (1945), in the iconic and immortal role of Garance. She also played memorable roles in *Le Jour se lève* (1939) and *Les Visiteurs du soir* (1942). She contributed to defining a cinematic female archetype blending charm, realism, and disillusionment.
