Armando Brancia

Armando Brancia (1917-1997) was an Italian actor, known primarily for his prolific film career as a character actor. His unmistakable figure and voice made him a recurring face in Italian auteur cinema.

He was one of Federico Fellini's staple actors, appearing in many of his masterpieces. His most iconic role is probably that of the melancholic and surreal Dottor Zio in *Amarcord* (1973). He also collaborated with Fellini on *Roma* (1972) and *Fellini's Casanova* (1976), where he played the protagonist's father.

Brancia excelled at embodying bourgeois characters, authoritarian figures who were often fragile or grotesque: doctors, professors, lawyers, military officers, or civil servants. His ability to infuse his roles with irony and a veiled melancholy made him a respected actor, capable of giving depth even to supporting roles. He also appeared in controversial films such as Pier Paolo Pasolini's *Salò or the 120 Days of Sodom* (1975).
