Carmela Sazio
**Carmela Sazio** was an Italian actress primarily known for her collaboration with director Pier Paolo Pasolini. Emblematic of his neorealist approach, Pasolini street-cast her for her authenticity.
Her most iconic role is Maddalena in the masterpiece *Mamma Roma* (1962), alongside Anna Magnani, where she embodies a young prostitute. In this film, Sazio rendered with raw naturalism and touching spontaneity the world of the Roman subproletariat. Although her film career was brief and limited to a few appearances (often uncredited), her screen presence was of rare intensity, making her an emblematic face of the "girls of the street" (ragazze di vita) and marginal figures so dear to Pasolini's poetics.
