Charles Ruggles

**Charles Ruggles (1886-1970)** was an American actor, known for his prolific film career spanning from the 1910s to the 1960s. He excelled in comedic roles, often portraying gentle, awkward, nervous, or slightly bewildered but good-hearted men. His comedy often relied on his reactions and on his characters being "cornered" or placed in uncomfortable situations.

Among his most important films are *Bringing Up Baby* (Susanna!, 1938), where he played the mayor, and *Ruggles of Red Gap* (Il magnifico Mr. Ruggles, 1935), as Egbert Floud, a central character although not the "Ruggles" of the title. He continued to act in television and film into old age, appearing in *The Parent Trap* (Il cowboy con il velo da sposa, 1961) as the grandfather. Ruggles is remembered as a familiar and reassuring face of Hollywood comedy.
