Chhabi Biswas
**Chhabi Biswas** (1900-1967) was an Indian actor, an icon of Bengali cinema. Known for his deep voice and imposing presence, he excelled at portraying aristocratic figures, landowners (zamindars), and patriarchs, often with a touch of tragedy or decadence.
His collaboration with director Satyajit Ray was pivotal. He delivered memorable performances in Ray's masterpieces such as *Jalsaghar* (The Music Room), where he portrayed the declining aristocrat Biswambhar Roy, and *Devi* (The Goddess). Other notable roles include those in Ray's *Kanchenjungha* and *Parash Pathar*, and in Tapan Sinha's *Kabuliwala*.
His powerful yet measured acting style made him a symbol of a certain nobility of spirit, both tragic and authoritative, in Indian cinema.
