Donald Wolfit
Donald Wolfit (1902-1968) was a British actor, renowned primarily for his formidable Shakespearean stage career, though also active in film.
His acting style was markedly theatrical, characterized by powerful diction, a dominant stage presence, and an ability to portray roles of great intensity and pathos. In film, Wolfit was often cast as authoritarian, complex, eccentric, or sometimes sinister figures.
His most significant cinematic role was the protagonist in the film *Svengali* (1954). He also appeared in high-profile films, albeit in supporting yet memorable roles, such as the authoritarian father in *Room at the Top* (1959), General Murray in *Lawrence of Arabia* (1962), and Bishop Folliot in *Becket* (1964). His distinctive presence enriched every production, leaving an indelible mark.
