Ethel Barrymore (1879-1959) was an American actress, a prominent figure of the celebrated Barrymore theatrical dynasty. Although primarily a stage icon, her film career gained momentum in her later years, earning her significant accolades.

She won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for *None but the Lonely Heart* (1944), where she portrayed Cary Grant's tormented mother. Other memorable performances include the elderly and sinister grandmother in *The Spiral Staircase* (1946), the elderly and wise housemistress in *Pinky* (1949), and the enigmatic character in *Portrait of Jennie* (1948).

Barrymore excelled in roles of strong, dignified older women, often aristocratic or authoritative, with an imposing presence and a deep, distinctive voice that lent her an aura of great wisdom and severity.
