
Fritz Kortner
**Kortner, Fritz** (1890-1970) German actor and director, a central figure of silent and Expressionist cinema. Known for his intense acting and his ability to portray complex characters, often tormented, ambiguous, or psychologically impactful. His expressive face and penetrating gaze made him ideal for psychological drama.
He left an indelible mark in films such as *Schatten – Eine nächtliche Halluzination* (1923), where he embodied the mysterious stranger, and *Orlacs Hände* (1924), in the role of the surgeon who restores the protagonist's hands. Other notable performances include *Hintertreppe* (1921) and *Die Büchse der Pandora* (1929). Forced into exile by the Nazis, he returned to Germany after the war, continuing to act and direct and influencing generations of actors with his profound and intellectual approach.
