George Raft

George Raft (1895-1980) was an American actor known for embodying the prototype of the elegant gangster and the 'tough guy' with a code of honor.

After a past as a dancer, his rise was rapid with supporting roles that led him to become a star. His role as Guino Rinaldo in Howard Hawks' *Scarface* (1932) cemented his status as an iconic figure. Raft excelled at playing urban characters, often morally ambiguous or criminal, yet endowed with sophisticated elegance and cold determination.

Among his most significant films are *Each Dawn I Die* (1939), *They Drive by Night* (1940), and *Manpower* (1941), often alongside Humphrey Bogart or Edward G. Robinson. His iconic habit of flipping a coin became a trademark. Although his star faded in later years, Raft remained a recognizable figure in film noir and crime drama.
