Gladys George

Gladys George (1900-1954) was an American actress known for her intense portrayals of supporting characters. With a career spanning theater and film, she distinguished herself in roles as strong, realistic, and often world-weary women: barmaids, saloon owners, former showgirls, or gruff but golden-hearted maternal figures.

Among her most memorable performances are Panama Smith in *The Roaring Twenties* (1939), Miriam Aarons in *The Women* (1939), and, perhaps her most iconic role, the ungraceful landlady Ida in the classic noir *The Maltese Falcon* (1941). She continued to act in minor roles until her death, leaving her mark as a versatile performer with an expressive face, capable of infusing depth and humanity into her characters.
