Hans Heinrich von Twardowski
**Hans Heinrich von Twardowski (1898-1958)** was a German actor, known for his aristocratic and often melancholic appearance. He became a distinctive figure in German silent cinema, especially during the Expressionist period.
His most iconic role was that of Alan, the ill-fated victim, in *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* (1920). He often portrayed sensitive, enigmatic characters or those destined for tragic events, with a predilection for aristocratic or intellectual figures.
With the rise of Nazism, Twardowski, openly homosexual and anti-Nazi, emigrated to the United States. Here, his career often saw him confined to secondary roles as German officers, spies, or authoritarian figures, sometimes villains. He appeared in several war films, though often in small parts, such as in *Casablanca* (1942), solidifying an image as a sophisticated antagonist.
