Hugh Marlowe

Hugh Marlowe (1911-1982) was an American film and television actor. He was known for often portraying intelligent and sophisticated characters, such as professionals (scientists, doctors, writers, lawyers) or authoritative figures who were not always heroic.

His film career saw him in significant supporting roles in classics. Unforgettable is his performance as the writer Lloyd Richards, manipulated by Eve Harrington, in *All About Eve* (1950). Equally iconic is his role as Dr. Tom Stevens in the celebrated science fiction film *The Day the Earth Stood Still* (1951). He also starred in *Earth vs. the Flying Saucers* (1956), solidifying his image in the sci-fi genre.

Marlowe distinguished himself with a measured acting style and the ability to infuse complexity into characters who often acted as voices of reason, albeit sometimes naive or morally ambiguous.
