**Jean Hersholt (1886-1956)** was a Danish-American actor whose career spanned both the silent and sound film eras. He was known for playing elderly, wise, and benevolent characters, often with a European touch, portraying paternal or authoritative figures.

His most celebrated performances include the Grandfather in *Heidi* (1937) alongside Shirley Temple, and the lead role in the popular film series *Dr. Christian* (which began in 1939), where he embodied an amiable small-town doctor. He also appeared in prestigious films such as *Grand Hotel* (1932).

His style was characterized by a dignified humanity and warmth. Hersholt is also remembered for his humanitarian work within the film industry, after whom the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award is named.
