Specializing in playing the loyal friend, the affable neighbor, or the comic sidekick, Donnell was gifted with an innate charm and versatility. Among her most notable roles were Eileen Sherwood in *My Sister Eileen* (1942), Deborah Randolph in *The Fuller Brush Man* (1948) alongside Red Skelton, and Sylvia Nicolai in the noir film *In a Lonely Place* (1950), where she gave a more dramatic performance.
