Sir John Gielgud (1904-2000) was a British actor, a legend of Shakespearean theatre who also established himself in cinema, especially in his later career. Although his primary fame stemmed from the stage, his film career was extensive and culminated with an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the sarcastic butler Hobson in *Arthur* (1981).

His other notable appearances include *Murder on the Orient Express* (1974), *Chariots of Fire* (1981), and *Gandhi* (1982). Known for his unmistakable voice and elegant presence, Gielgud often portrayed authoritative, aristocratic, or high-society figures, imbuing his characters with dignity, wit, and subtle irony.
