**José Lewgoy (1920-1995)** was a prominent Brazilian actor, known for his imposing screen presence and the intensity of his performances. His film career, spanning over forty years, saw him star in numerous key Brazilian and international films.

He achieved international recognition with *O Pagador de Promessas* (The Given Word, 1962), a Palme d'Or winner at Cannes. Other memorable performances include those in *Macunaíma* (1969), *Pixote, a Lei do Mais Fraco* (Pixote, the Law of the Weakest, 1981), and *O Beijo da Mulher-Aranha* (Kiss of the Spider Woman, 1985).

Lewgoy was renowned for his ability to embody complex and often ambiguous characters: figures of power, tormented intellectuals, or charismatic antagonists.
