Celebrated for his imposing presence, deep voice, and his ability to portray characters of great dignity and strength, Hernandez often avoided the stereotypes of the era, bringing complex and resilient figures to the screen.

His most iconic role was Lucas Beauchamp in Clarence Brown's *Intruder in the Dust* (1949), where he portrayed an elderly Black man unjustly accused—a powerful and groundbreaking performance for its time. Other notable performances include *The Breaking Point* (1950) and *Stars in My Crown* (1950). He left a legacy of memorable performances, challenging Hollywood's racial conventions.
