**Jules Berry** (1883-1951) was a distinctive French actor, renowned for his portrayal of complex characters: often cynical, evil, or ambiguous, but always possessing a diabolical charm and subtle intelligence.
With his unmistakable voice and expressive face, he became an emblematic figure of French Poetic Realism. He collaborated with directors such as Marcel Carné and Jean Renoir. His most celebrated roles include the diabolical Monsieur Valentin in *Le Jour se lève* (1939) and the Devil in *Les Visiteurs du Soir* (1942), both by Carné. He was also notable in Renoir's *Le Crime de Monsieur Lange* (1936).
