Lianella Carell

**Lianella Carell** (Rome, May 6, 1927 – Rome, September 22, 2000) was an Italian actress who became a symbol of Italian Neorealism.

She is universally remembered for her unforgettable portrayal of Maria, the protagonist's wife, in Vittorio De Sica's masterpiece, *Bicycle Thieves* (1948). Although not a professional actress, Carell distinguished herself with her authentic and unmannered acting.

A perfect embodiment of the common women—often suffering but endowed with great dignity and inner strength—typical of Neorealist cinema, her relatively brief film career also includes other significant titles such as *Forbidden Christ* (1951) by Curzio Malaparte, *The Overcoat* (1952) by Alberto Lattuada, and *The City Stands Trial* (1952) by Luigi Zampa. After a few years, she abandoned acting to dedicate herself to writing.
