Lionel Barrymore

Lionel Barrymore (1878-1954) was an American actor of the celebrated Barrymore family. He had a long and prolific film career, from the silent era until the post-war period.

He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for *A Free Soul* (1931) and was also acclaimed in *Grand Hotel* (1932). He played memorable roles in masterpieces such as *You Can't Take It with You* (1938) and *Key Largo* (1948). However, he is perhaps best known for his iconic and terrifying portrayal of the villainous banker Mr. Potter in *It's a Wonderful Life* (1946).

Barrymore specialized in authoritative characters, often gruff, cynical, or overtly evil, though sometimes capable of great wisdom. His imposing screen presence and gravelly voice made him an unforgettable character actor, capable of imbuing depth and complexity into every role.
