Lionel Stander

**Lionel Stander (1907-1994)** was an American actor, known for his gravelly voice and for playing "tough guy" roles or cynical and gruff characters.

His film career began in the 1930s, acting in films like Frank Capra's *Mr. Deeds Goes to Town* (1936), often in the role of the loyal but brusque assistant. An active union member, he was unjustly blacklisted in Hollywood in the 1950s, forcing him to continue his career in Europe.

Here he found newfound success, becoming a familiar face in international cinema. Among his most memorable roles was that of the Barman in Sergio Leone's Western masterpiece *Once Upon a Time in the West* (1968), in an iconic opening sequence. He also participated in productions such as *Cassandra Crossing* (1976). In later years, he returned to work in the United States, appearing in films like Steven Spielberg's *1941* (1979).

Stander excelled at portraying loyal but disillusioned sidekicks or minor criminals, leaving a distinctive mark with his unmistakable presence and his forthright style.
