Louise Brooks
Brooks, Louise (Cherryvale, Kansas, 1906 – Rochester, New York, 1985) was an American actress and dancer, a silent film and fashion icon known for her distinctive bob haircut.
After an early career in Hollywood, she achieved international fame in Europe, particularly through her collaboration with German director G.W. Pabst. Her most famous role was that of Lulu in *Pandora's Box* (Die Büchse der Pandora, 1929), a film that cemented her status as a femme fatale, ambiguous yet innocent. This was followed by another success with Pabst, *Diary of a Lost Girl* (Tagebuch einer Verlorenen, 1929).
Brooks embodied complex characters, possessing magnetic beauty and spontaneous sensuality. Despite a relatively brief film career and an early retirement, she became a posthumous cultural icon, admired for her charisma and her ability to embody the liberated spirit of the 1920s.
