Lucie Mannheim
Lucie Mannheim (1899-1976) was a German actress with a significant career in pre-war German cinema. Forced to flee Nazi Germany due to her Jewish heritage, she found success in the United Kingdom.
She is best remembered for her iconic role in Alfred Hitchcock's **The 39 Steps** (1935), where she played the mysterious spy Annabella Smith. This role defined her image as an enigmatic and international woman. Her British and subsequent filmography, which includes titles such as **High Treason** (1951) and **Bhowani Junction** (1956), often saw her in roles as complex women, sometimes with undertones of espionage or danger. Mannheim excelled at embodying sophisticated and intelligent characters, characterized by discreet elegance and a magnetic presence, often with a veil of mystery. After the war, she also returned to work in Germany.
