**Marcello Pagliero (1907 – 1980)** was an Italian actor and director, an emblematic figure of Neorealist cinema.

He is best known for his intense portrayal of **Giorgio Manfredi** in Roberto Rossellini's **"Rome, Open City" (1945)**, one of the masterpieces of Neorealism. His character, a symbol of intellectual resistance, largely defined his on-screen image.

Pagliero also appeared in other important films of the period, such as Rossellini's **"Paisan" (1946)**. His career saw him tackling complex and tormented roles, often portraying figures of intellectuals, artists, or individuals in moral conflict. His screen presence was characterized by a subtle melancholy, a profound introspection, and an ability to express a suffering dignity. Alongside his acting career, he directed several films, including **"La notte porta consiglio" (1951)**.
