
Mary Alden
Mary Alden (1883-1946) was an American film actress, primarily active during the silent film era and known for her intense character roles.
Closely associated with director D.W. Griffith, she appeared in some of his most celebrated films. Her most iconic performance was that of Mrs. Cameron/Lydia Brown in *The Birth of a Nation* (1915), where she portrayed a courageous and suffering mother. She also appeared as the "Mother of the Mountains" in *Intolerance* (1916).
Alden was often cast as strong, resilient, sometimes tragic female figures, or archetypal mothers, demonstrating remarkable dramatic ability. She continued her career into the sound era, albeit in minor roles.
