**May Robson (1858-1942)** was a British actress naturalized American. With a long and distinguished theatrical career behind her, she made her mark in sound cinema in her later years, becoming one of Hollywood's most recognizable older women.

She became known for her roles as energetic grandmothers, wise matriarchs, or eccentric older ladies, often possessing a caustic wit or great dignity. Her most celebrated performance was that of Apple Annie in Frank Capra's *Lady for a Day* (1933), which earned her an Academy Award nomination.

She also appeared in iconic films such as *Anna Karenina* (1935), *Wife vs. Secretary* (1936), *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer* (1938) as Aunt Polly, and *Bringing Up Baby* (1938). Her screen presence and her ability to infuse character into her roles made her a pillar of classic cinema.
