Among his most memorable film appearances are the captain of the *Louisa* in **The African Queen** (1951), the Russian ambassador De Sadesky in **Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb** (1964), and Thwackum in **Tom Jones** (1963).
