Specializing in historical and larger-than-life characters, he shone in memorable performances as Henry II in *Becket* (1964) and *The Lion in Winter* (1968), displaying a unique ability to balance regal nobility and complex vulnerability. O'Toole was known for his emphatic style and piercing eyes.
