Ray Walston

Ray Walston (1914-2001) was an American character actor renowned for his remarkable versatility and his ability to bring to life characters who were often eccentric, sharp, or with a touch of mischief. His long film career was studded with unforgettable roles.

He is best known for portraying the devilish Mr. Applegate in the musical *Damn Yankees* (1958), a role he had previously originated on Broadway. Other notable films include his performance as Luther Billis in *South Pacific* (1958) and a memorable appearance in *The Sting* (1973). Walston became a generational icon thanks to his stern but beloved role as Mr. Hand, the history teacher, in *Fast Times at Ridgemont High* (1982). He also played Poopdeck Pappy in *Popeye* (1980). His screen presence was always distinctive, lending his characters depth, intelligence, and often an irresistible humor.
