Stéphane Audran

**Stéphane Audran** (Versailles, November 8, 1932 – Paris, March 27, 2018) was a French actress, an icon of European art-house cinema.

A muse and favorite collaborator of director Claude Chabrol, her husband at the time, she starred in numerous of his films, defining their sophisticated and ambiguous aesthetic. Among the most celebrated are *La Femme infidèle* (1969), *Le Boucher* (1970), and *Violette Nozière* (1978), in which she often portrayed bourgeois women, elegant yet complex, capable of hiding secrets or dark impulses behind an impeccable facade.

She achieved international fame with Luis Buñuel's *The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie* (1972), which won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. She reaffirmed her talent later in her career with *Babette's Feast* (1987), another Oscar-winning film. Her style was characterized by a cool beauty, an enigmatic detachment, and an innate ability to convey both vulnerability and inner strength.
