Susan Kohner (1941) is an American actress best known for her intense performance in the 1959 film "Imitation of Life."
In the film, she portrayed Sarah Jane, the daughter who disavows her African-American heritage to pass as white, a dramatically complex role that earned her an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.
Kohner was often cast as young, complex women, sometimes tormented or rebellious, who grapple with dilemmas of identity and belonging. Her other significant works include "The Last Voyage" (1960) and "By Love Possessed" (1961). She retired from acting in the early 1960s to focus on her family.
