Agnès Varda

Agnès Varda (1928-2019) was a French film director, screenwriter, and photographer, a key and pioneering figure of the Nouvelle Vague, often anticipating its style.

Her debut film, *La Pointe Courte* (1954), is considered a precursor for its fragmented narrative and the use of non-professional actors. Among her most celebrated fiction films are *Cléo de 5 à 7* (1962), a real-time portrait of a woman in an existential crisis, and *Sans toit ni loi* (Vagabond, 1985), winner of the Golden Lion at Venice, a raw portrait of freedom and marginalization.

In later years, Varda distinguished herself with documentaries and essay films, often blending the personal with the social. Examples include *Les glaneurs et la glaneuse* (The Gleaners and I, 2000), a reflection on abundance and waste, and *Visages Villages* (Faces Places, 2017), her last success.

Her style is characterized by deep humanity, a feminist gaze, and a constant fusion of fiction and reality, making her a unique and innovative auteur in the global cinematic landscape.
