Chloé Zhao

**Chloé Zhao** (Beijing, 1982) is a Chinese-American film director, screenwriter, and producer, acclaimed for her distinctive and deeply human cinematic style.

Her career took off with independent films such as *Songs My Brothers Taught Me* (2015) and, in particular, *The Rider* (2017), which earned her international acclaim. In these works, Zhao developed a naturalistic approach, often employing non-professional actors and stories rooted in the reality of rural America, exploring themes of identity, loss, and resilience.

She achieved global fame with *Nomadland* (2020), a masterpiece that earned her the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, making her the first Asian woman and only the second woman ever to win the latter award. Her style is characterized by a deep empathy for marginalized characters, evocative cinematography, and a contemplative atmosphere that blends fiction and documentary. She went on to direct the blockbuster *Eternals* (2021) for Marvel.
