Deniz Gamze Ergüven (1978) is a French-Turkish director and screenwriter known for her ability to explore social issues through intimate narratives.
Her debut feature film, Mustang (2015), received widespread international acclaim. Set in a Turkish village, the film tells the story of five orphaned sisters who rebel against social and patriarchal constraints, becoming an anthem to female freedom. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and won numerous awards (including four Césars).
She then directed *Kings* (2017), a drama set during the 1992 Los Angeles riots, starring Halle Berry and Daniel Craig.
Her style is distinguished by her attention to family dynamics, the strength of her female characters, and the search for emancipation in the face of tradition, often with a sensitivity that combines delicacy and social commentary.
