Dziga Vertov
**Dziga Vertov**, pseudonym of David Abelevich Kaufman (1896-1954), was a pioneer of Soviet avant-garde cinema. The founder of the Kinoks (Cine-eyes) movement, he theorized “Kino-eye” (Cine-eye), an approach to documentary filmmaking based on capturing “life caught by surprise,” rejecting bourgeois narrative fiction in favor of objective reality.
His masterpiece is **Man with a Movie Camera** (1929), a revolutionary experimental documentary that explores Soviet urban life through dynamic editing and innovative techniques, staging the very process of filmmaking. His other notable works include the newsreel series *Kinopravda* (1922-1925) and the “sound cine-poem” *Entuziazm: Simfonija Donbassa* (1931). His style is characterized by his virtuoso use of editing, fast pacing, and the search for cinematic “truth,” profoundly influencing documentary filmmaking and experimental cinema worldwide.
