After an initial career in documentary filmmaking, he gained international recognition with his British feature films *Last Resort* (2000) and *My Summer of Love* (2004), which explore complex relationships and marginalized settings.
His fame surged with *Ida* (2013), a black-and-white film set in 1960s Poland, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He then solidified his position with *Cold War* (2018), an epic drama about the Cold War, for which he was awarded Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival.
