Peter Greenaway (born in 1942) is a British film director and screenwriter, celebrated for his distinctive cinematic style. His works are often described as painterly, baroque, and intellectual, characterized by a strong emphasis on aesthetics, symmetry, numerology, and complex themes such as art, sexuality, and death.

He gained international notoriety with *The Draughtsman's Contract* (1982), a stylized historical mystery. His most famous, and perhaps most controversial, film is *The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover* (1989), known for its raw violence and sumptuous production design. Other significant works include *A Zed & Two Noughts* (1985) and *Prospero's Books* (1991). Greenaway is an auteur who continues to explore the boundaries of cinematic language with bold and sophisticated visions.
