Robert Wiene
**Robert Wiene (1873-1938)** was an influential German director, best known for his contribution to German Expressionist cinema. His most celebrated work is undoubtedly *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* (1920), considered the masterpiece and manifesto of the Expressionist movement.
The film is emblematic for its deliberately distorted sets, angular set designs, and dramatic use of light and shadow, which reflect altered states of mind and the psychology of the characters. Wiene often explored themes of madness, paranoia, and disorientation, as also seen in *Genuine* (1920) and *The Hands of Orlac* (1924). His distinctive style left an indelible mark on the history of cinema, influencing generations of directors.
