Takeshi Kitano
**Takeshi Kitano** (Tokyo, 1947), also known as **Beat Takeshi**, is a versatile Japanese director, actor, screenwriter, and former comedian. His cinematic career is marked by a distinctive style: films characterized by sudden and stylized violence, often juxtaposed with moments of tranquility and melancholy. His characters are frequently stoic, enigmatic, and solitary.
Among his most celebrated directorial works are his debut *Violent Cop* (1989), the contemplative *Sonatine* (1993), and *Hana-bi – Fireworks* (1997), which won the Golden Lion at Venice and solidified his international reputation. He also directed and starred in the acclaimed *Zatoichi* (2003). As an actor, he gained international recognition even before directing, thanks to his role in Nagisa Ōshima's *Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence* (1983). Kitano has created a unique universe, blending yakuza aesthetics with profound existential reflections.
