**Zhang Yimou** (Xi'an, 1950) is one of the most celebrated Chinese directors of the Fifth Generation.

Beginning as a cinematographer, he gained international acclaim for his historical and social dramas, often starring Gong Li. Films like *Red Sorghum* (1987), *Raise the Red Lantern* (1991), and *To Live!* (1994) explored themes of female resilience and social injustice, characterized by a strong visual aesthetic and vivid colors, earning Academy Award nominations.

Subsequently, Zhang distinguished himself with visually stunning wuxia epics. With titles such as *Hero* (2002) and *House of Flying Daggers* (2004), he demonstrated mastery in choreography and cinematography, creating blockbusters that blend action, history, and art. His style is recognizable for its meticulous attention to set design details, expressive use of color, and the ability to tell personal stories against the backdrop of grand historical events.
