Howard Wendell (Pittsfield, January 25, 1908 – Oregon City, August 11, 1975) was an American character actor. Primarily active between the 1940s and 1970s, he began his career on Broadway, where he distinguished himself in the role of Cap'n Andy Hawks in the revival of "Show Boat." He later moved to Hollywood, becoming a familiar face in film and especially in television. Specializing in roles of authority figures, such as doctors, judges, or businessmen, he appeared in films like "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953) and "Prince Valiant" (1954). His fame is particularly linked to his numerous appearances in successful television series. Among his most notable recurring roles are the neighbor Mr. Beman in "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show" and the principal Mr. Haller in "Leave It to Beaver." Although he did not receive any major awards, Wendell is recognized as one of the most prolific and reliable character actors of his generation, capable of effectively portraying a wide range of supporting characters.
