Leung San
Leung San (1826–1901), whose courtesy name was Leung Jan, was a renowned physician and Chinese martial arts master active in Foshan during the Qing dynasty. He is universally recognized as a pivotal figure in the history of Wing Chun, earning him the title of "King of Wing Chun" (詠春拳王). His primary contribution was not in written texts, but in the systematization and dissemination of the art, which he learned from the masters of the Red Boat Opera Company. His martial arts career developed in parallel with his medical profession; he managed a pharmacy that also became a place of instruction for a select group of disciples, including his sons Leung Bik and Leung Chun, and notably Chan Wah-shun. Through the latter's lineage, his teachings were passed down to Ip Man, ensuring the style's continuity and worldwide fame. Therefore, his most significant legacy lies in his role as a patriarch in the Wing Chun lineage and in the lasting influence his skills and methods have had on subsequent generations of practitioners worldwide.
