He is primarily remembered for his iconic portrayal of the Stalker in Andrei Tarkovsky's eponymous film (1979), a role that defined his image as an enigmatic and profoundly contemplative actor.

Before "Stalker," he distinguished himself in Nikita Mikhalkov's "At Home Among Strangers" (1974), where his performance contributed to the film's success.
