His breakthrough on the big screen came at a mature age with supporting but impactful roles in successful films such as *Los lunes al sol* (2002) by Fernando León de Aranoa, where he played the protagonist's father. He then distinguished himself in *Mar adentro* (2004) by Alejandro Amenábar, for which he won the Goya Award for Best Supporting Actor, in the role of Ramón Sampedro's father.
He continued to shine in works such as *La noche de los girasoles* (2006), *Agora* (2009), and *Amador* (2010).
